Project Overview

Magweja is a bold, action-packed series set in the dusty mining town of Magweja, Zimbabwe. It follows a bumbling police officer, crafty miners, and a determined tuck shop owner as they face corrupt politicians and ruthless mining mafias, all while protecting their community from environmental destruction. Blending sharp social commentary with humor, drama, and suspense, the series shines a light on greed, bribes, and survival in a world driven by gold.

01. Concept & Pre-production

The vision was to create a socially conscious yet entertaining series that captures the realities of mining communities. Written by Elias Muonde, Sharon Chideu, and Donald Mabido, the project was developed to highlight environmental justice and community resilience while delivering laughter and drama.

02. Production

Directed by Dereck Nziyakwi and Chimwemwe Chipidza, and produced by Dexter Fundire and Dalvin Matunga, Magweja was filmed with high production values. The crew included D.O.P Lewis Aaron, Gaffer Farai Chimombe, Wardrobe by Sabina Mutsvati, Sound by Dumisani Mvula, Set Design by M.M Mabhikwa, and Makeup by Tari Zinyemba.

03. Post-production & Recognition

Edited to deliver a gripping and authentic viewing experience, Magweja combines sharp visuals, immersive sound design, and compelling performances. The series resonated widely with audiences and was honored with the Outstanding Screen Production Award at the National Arts Merit Awards.
